Google's New Carbon Profiling Project

This is an interesting alternative to http://www.thecarbonaccount.com:

http://www.google.co.uk/carbonfootprint/index.html

Not as precise as thecarbonaccount, but offers good facilities for comparison with other users. It’s good to see Google getting involved.

Google uses AMEE

Hi George,

Google’s project uses AMEE, the same calculation engine that powers the Government’s Act on CO2 calculator (see http://www.carbonrationing.org.uk/wiki/evaluation-of-web-based-personal-...). All of the data is sent back to AMEE, adding to the pool of data contributed by all the different AMEE projects.

The Carbon Account also uses AMEE, and we’re keen for web developers to further integrate the two tools so that the estimates created by tools such as Google’s and Act on CO2 can be compared directly with the empirical data captured by the Carbon Account. See http://www.amee.cc/?p=172

Both AMEE and the Carbon Account are open source, so anyone with the skills and inclination is able to have a go at further developing functionality. See also http://code.thecarbonaccount.com.

Green fun ...

I was checking out Google’s Carbon Footprint tools today, and its looking good. You can’t seem to enter your bill readings (or maybe I’m missing something), but the best thing is that it comes across as really fun. This is what we need: out with telling people off, nobody can resist playful greenery!

Some of these videos (also on one of the Google panels) are priceless: http://www.skycast.com/greenshoots. We must get this site video-enabled and have loads of tutorials, testimonials and other great stuff here.
