CRAGger in search of crag

Hi everyone, not too sure how to put this but I need a crag! Nothing seems to be happening anywhere near me so can I be an internet only member of your group? There are two crags ( Brighton and West Sussex ) but no-ones doing anything. Thanks.

welcome to internet-join Peckham crag in south London, but...

You’d be most welcome to join Peckham crag, which is starting up in a couple of weeks’ time. We are having a series of introductory meetings in Peckham library, the first being on 16th Oct, with one a month until Christmas.

We’d like to view meetings as a way to build consensus between our community and take care that we take all views and positions into account when setting up the rules, etc. I’d worry that if you didn’t actually come to any meetings then you may find that we agree things that you aren’t happy with, or don’t feel involved in. Our meetings should be once every three months from 2008. They will be on Tuesday evenings. Could you feel able to come to perhaps one or two of these? We are not insisting at all that all craggers should attend all meetings, as long as we are all comfortable with what we set up initially.

If you’d still like to join our email list and read about our discussions and outcomes, and come to a meeting when you can manage it, you are most welcome.

Have you thought about setting up your own local crag? Might be more effective than joining one miles away….???

Starting a new crag

I did think about this but if both my local crags are lacking in members and action starting a new one probably isn’t going to work. Anyway I may be up on the 16th.

Groups that don't seem to get started

I have emailed you and Tia (the admin of the Brighton group) and asked her to respond to your posts.

But as Zaria says, you can always start your own group in Brighton and do contact the other people that have subscribed to the Brighton group. We do need to make web changes to make this more obvious (see making up our own group names).

thinking virtually

I’ve hardly experienced a physical CRAG myself yet, and this is one for much more experienced people to ponder; but would an entirely online CRAG group work in any useful way? There’d be many obstacles/downsides, but I’m guessing an ‘active’ internet CRAG may concentrate the mind on carbon reduction practices more than waiting for a physical group to coagulate. Obviously the ideal would be to start a physical group, but that takes a lot of work & energy, which would be offputting to some. Online online members then of course have the option of transfering…

just a vague idea, feel free to kick around until it falls apart. ;-)

virtual CRAGs

Hi Simon,

First of all, a pedal-powered PA is genius! At the Climate Camp they had something similar (I think it was called Wizzy-Wig or something?) and it was great.

I think a virtual CRAG is a great idea, and a logical addition to normal CRAGs. Tom Dyson is about to start the Cotswold CRAG (finally!) and because he and I both work for Torchbox, who have developed www.thecarbonaccount.com, we’ll be using that as our accounting tool. Obviously the thing about an online CRAG is that everyone would need to use the same tool and sometimes it can be hard to decide on things like emissions factors, and someone has to run the thing (including aggregating group data etc) but I think generally it’s worth doing for the added benefit it would have to unite people and communities all rationing on their own. One question to bear in mind is how to make sure only committed people sign up and not just people with five minutes to spare browsing the web.

CC – it was Rinky Dink,

CC – it was Rinky Dink, although the Bicycolgy people had a small system too. We’re static rather than mobile, but can deal with everything from 8 piece acoustic bands to laptop electronica… main limitation is transport, we often have to hire a van to get it anywhere. If anyone wants to get involved, please get in touch, I’m especially keen to get more people to build generator stands which are of course theirs to use most of the year anyway…

I’ll leave the online CRAG idea to the clever people. ;-)

Its a good idea.

Its a good idea. Apparently, junglee has already set one using Facebook, and we discussed it a little on the CRAGs and Facebook thread.

I think there’d be a different dynamic to the group: it might mean people are happier to trade, and that they coalesce around shared interests and philosophies. But, yes, as Jamie says, it would be more difficult to establish trust and make sure members are really committed.

I can add a “virtual” category (or similar?) to the groups page, if there’s interest.

This needs some thinking about

I think a virtual category for the groups page would be good, but before a ‘virtual CRAG’ group starts, we need to have some sort of online tutorial/initiation so that people really understand how carbon rationing (and trading?) works. There’s so much potential, and although non-web-enabled people is an issue, I really think the internet is the main factor that will help CRAGs spread and ultimately contribute to global policy discussions.

I checked Facebook and there’s only a few applications related to carbon. If you log into your Facebook and then paste this url – http://www.facebook.com/apps/index.php?q=carbon – then you’ll see what’s there (I can’t find the one that junglee references in the other thread).

Torchbox have thought about a Facebook app for the Carbon Account, but we’ve held off so far, mainly because we think it’s important to establish all of the principles of rationing/trading and technical issues outside of the restrictions of a Facebook app. Also, in my experience a lot of people are getting annoyed with loads of new applications on their Facebook profile (me included) so it might be better to wait until things have ‘settled down’ a bit. Ultimately it could be a very useful way of sharing emissions information and potentially even trading, but I think we should continue to thrash out the issues before jumping in at the deep end.
