CRAGs in Australia and New Zealand

Unbeknownst to us lot in Blighty, CRAGs are beginning in Australia and New Zealand!

An Australian organisation, Carbon Equity, is initiating the first CRAGs down under, with lots of information on its website:
http://www.carbonequity.info/crags/

Email info@carbonequity.info to contact them. Guys, if you pick up this message, we’d love to hear more from you!

Some Australian press articles from the past year also suggest personal carbon trading is creeping up the agenda in Oz – let’s hope that the new government will be sympathetic. See http://www.smh.com.au/news/environment/carbon-credit-debate-gets-persona… and http://bordermail.yourguide.com.au/articles/1108637.html?src=borderredir….

In New Zealand, CRAGs have begun via the NGO Climate Defence Network:
http://www.climatedefence.org.nz/local_action.html

To see a report from the first meeting of the East Harbour CRAG, go to http://www.climatedefence.org.nz/docs/EHCRAG_report_of_meeting.doc; and for a presentation, http://www.climatedefence.org.nz/docs/establish_nz_crag.doc

I’ll be getting in touch more formally with both Australian and NZ Craggers soon, but everyone should feel free to get the contacts going!
Most of all, welcome on board!

After emailing the NZ and Australian Craggers directly, I recently got this reply from Neesh in Melbourne:

I was so excited to receive your email! Thanks.

My name is Neesh and I am trying to start a CRAG in the inner western
suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria. I have strong support from my local
council who have incorporated it in their ‘carbon neutral’ plan. I
also have a small local group who with trial carbon rationing and
hopefully we can get more people interested … but so far no one has
emailed me. We hope to do a huge publicity appeal in Feb to coincide
with a Melbourne Sustainable living festival and climate convergence
with Friends of the Earth (where I volunteer).

So I guess we will be up and running in a month or two, but only a
very small group so far. We are currently discussing what we will
actually trade … eg. gardening time or babysitting or boxes of
organic veggies or a massage as opposed to money … not quite sure
yet … any tips?

I have tried to contact the other two groups listed on the
carbonequity website but neither of them have returned my email – have you had any responses?

You are more than welcome to put links to my email anywhere to do
with CRAG etc.

Thanks again for the email, please keep me updated on any exciting
CRAG-ging information!

David or John, is it possible for us to set up a page for Neesh’s CRAG on the main website? I don’t think the Oz/NZ craggers have really discovered this Forum yet, assuming it to be UK only (I’ve let them know it isn’t!).

Thanks for the update from

Thanks for the update from down under – seems very exciting!

All you need to do is go to “Groups” then “Start new CRAG” and fill in the form. Set the country to “Australia” and the new index pages should appear, although I’ll have to put it in the map settings myself afterwards.

Ideally, Neesh needs to register first and do that her(him?)-self, although you could do it yourself, Guy, if you want to put down a placeholder and then transfer it later.

I’ve recently had two more missives from Crags in Australia:

1)From Dean Bridgfoot, Castlemaine Crag:

Gidday Guy

We are still in the stages of setting up our Crag structure, and applied for some funding to help us do so that enables us to assist other groups do the same. If that funding is successful we will be getting stuck into it soon, if not we will undertake a more modest CRAG program.

We can talk about that further once we know if our application has been successful, which should be in the next few weeks.

As far as interest goes, as we discussed the idea the local media were very interested, as have several nearby groups. So things are looking good for CRAGing i think.

I will let you know more once we get some word back on our funding submission.

Regards

Dean

2) From Bill Pemberton, Manningham Crag:

Hi Guy,
We have only just started. I am a council Conservation Officer at Manningham City Council here in in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne Victoria.
The council here is taking a leadershio role in facillating the formation of the CRAG Groups.
I have been running a series of workshops called Get ClimateWise Now! and people who are empowered to act are encouraged to sign onto the CRAG grouup so far we have about 70 signed up and we are looking to organise some Solar PV installations in first half of this year

Keep up the good work

Cheers
