CRAGs, offsets, trading, and markets

Hey Guys, I hate to intrude with this thought, but people are beginning to contact us about the potential for an actual market for personal carbon emissions reduction trading. It also seems that we are getting a lot of signups from people who are actually not just interested in the issue personally, though they sign up as CRAG members. For example, they represent companies that make energy saving devices, sell offsets, or are members of the media. I have some questions to begin some discussions:

Are we ready to begin discussions about personal offset trading? How much are we willing to discuss at this point? Do we want to talk about an actual market, certification issues, etc?

I thought I was offering to help get a CRAG started and discovered that the person interested in organizing it worked for a carbon offset firm. I have had it happen several times that I signed someone up for my CRAG only to learn that they are a newspaper reporter. And I have had people sign up as Craggers who are interested in promoting products. How should we address these types of situations? Do we want people with a corporate motive signed up as Craggers? If not, do we want them to sign up some other way? How can we screen them?

I think we need to address these questions.

I hope that David will change the user registration to distinguish between those want to join a CRAG and those that are simply subscribing for email updates from a particular local group (see thread).

CRAGgers are the people that turn up to the meetings and agree to a set of rules. Islington and Hackney CRAG has ten members, we all must update our footprints quarterly, we all must turn up to 4 meetings a year and we settle every six months. The uncommitted identify themselves very quickly. It does not really matter if the individuals are journalists or they run Exxon as long as they are fully engaged and it is hard to fake this. We still let journalists and researchers come to meetings. People have discussed online CRAGs but i think it would be hard to create a comparable supportive online community and then there is the question of trust when it comes to settlement.

Are we ready to begin discussions about personal offset trading? I hope we never talk about offset trading. A lot of people are still missing the point; 250 millions Americans, 60 million Brits cannot all offset.

Offsets, trading & financial motives

Do you mean buying offsets, or carbon trading? Some groups have used their carbon fund to buy offsets, but they’ve been quite roundly discredited, as John says. We’ve discussed carbon trading between groups, but the first barrier is having a common footprinting standard. AMEE has established a standard that is used by The Carbon Account and ActonCO2 – so, theoretically, any group of groups using those calculators could start trading between themselves.

On the site, we don’t want to be anti-commercial, but we do ask for balance and fairness where financial motives are involved. If someone is setting up a CRAG to financially support or aid one particular offset or any other business, they shouldn’t be part of the community, in my view – unless it’s a group decision to go down that route.

I take it on and see where it goes

Just stick to the rules you have made up. I’d like to see where they think offsets and CRAG can work together. And then how it plays out.

My personal view on offsets is similar to the rest with the exception that offsets can be used only when you have done everything else resonably possible to reduce your emissions.
