It’s a bit like (the excellent) end of suburbia. Middle class whites moved to the suburbs in the fifties and abandoned downtown Detroit. But the car companies built their own suburbs and were responsible for removing road/rail tracks, making car ownership essential. The car companies failed to satisfy the demand for smaller, fuel efficient cars, twice, back in the eighties and most recently. The Detroit population has fallen and many houses have been abandoned; they are being disassembled and the materials are being recycled.

Great music; jazz and motown, all the way through.
