UK CRAGs get-together in March - should we go treeplanting?

NB the finalised plan is now available at the bottom of this thread.

Hi everyone, wow, I haven’t been keeping up with the Forum, there’s soo much info on here!

Gathering-wise…

_____________________________________________________

BACKGROUND

A few of us met up at Climate Camp, and found talking to each other was really useful – and pleasant! So though it would be a good idea to have a UK-wide CRAGs meeting. Back then March seemed a long way away – so loots of time to organise.. Nick and I were there from the Leeds group, and offered to host the meeting, as Leeds is more or less in the middle of the UK, and there is a social centre here which we could use for meetings and lots of housing coops that could potentially put people up.

_____________________________________________________

SUGGESTION

Perhaps a bit late in the day, we thought it would be a better idea if we combined a get-together with treeplanting.. Who wants to be in a meeting room in Leeds on a weekend – and we are really mostly getting to know each other. And planting trees is always a good excuse..

_____________________________________________________

PROVISIONAL PLAN

There is a “local” charity in Calderdale who organise treeplanting with various groups (www.treesponsibility.com, 01422 843222 – The Treesponsibility Office, treesponsibility@yahoo.co.uk), who I’ve contacted last week. It seems the only weekend that we could feasibly organise going is 8-9 March, which is the Treesponsibility birthday weekend. That would cost us £45 per person, including (lovely) food and accommodation (and saplings!). Treesponsibility are really good at taking care of people.. The normal plan is

- meet up at Leeds train station, or on the train to Hebden Bridge, some time that we can arrange on Friday afternoon (7 March); train to HB is 45-50 mins from Leeds (or turn up some time on Friday at Hebden Bridge train station, or we could let you know where we’re staying/planting if you can’t make it till Sat.)

- we can arrange to be picked up from the station by the Treesponsibility van, or take our bikes with us and cycle – or walk to Height Gate, a lovely converted barn on a hill near HB (about an hour’s walk)

- all meals will be vegan and cooked on site by the Treesponsibility lot, including soup and tea/cake brought to the treeplanting site – they’re great cooks, so food will be a treat! i could also arrange to buy a few bottles of local organic ale and have it delivered if people are interested!

- accommodation: floor space, so we need to bring mats and sleeping bags. The barn should be pretty warm though! If someone would really need a bed, we’d need to let them know because I think there is only 1 or 2.

- on sat and sun morning we will be driven (alas!) to the planting site by the lovely Billy in the treesponsibility van.

- then return to the train station on sunday by any of the means mentioned above, and at a time we can arrange.

ACTION

So, in order to see how many people are up for this suggestion, PLEASE REPLY TO ME, OR TO THIS THREAD, WITH THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION:

If you’re up for a CRAGs Gathering,

(1) are you available on the weekend 8-9 March, and, if so,

(2) would you like to meet up with the rest of us in Leeds or Hebden Bridge on Friday/what time could you make it.

If you’re not able to make 8-9 March please still get back to me, and let me know when you would be available – it might turn out that 60% of the people who want to come can’t make this weekend but could make the one before or after or something!

I’D BE LUCKY

I really hope you’ve got to this part of the thread! :)

Hope to see you soon

Yes great idea. I would like to take part

Rick M

Hi, I would love to meet up with other CRAGGers and this sounds like a fun way to do it. I am recruiting for a CRAG for Sheffield & the surrounding towns. This looks like a great idea. I will reserve that weekend.

CRAG national meetup and tree-planting

Hi Despina and everyone,

I would be up for this, but I originally had the weekend of March 29th – 30th pencilled in as ‘CRAG conference’. I’m still available on 8th and 9th, but would this tree-planting session be instead of the conference, or as well as? What are people’s thoughts?
Thanks,
Zaria

This sounds like a brilliant plan, we’ll see if someone from Bristol can make it – not sure who yet, that weekends tricky for me but maybe not impossible

That sounds a great idea, Despina. Unfortunately Cath and I are already booked up for that weekend, but we could make it on later weekends in March or April.

Finalising plan (I love online consensus decision making)

despina

Hello again – nice to see lots of interest in this! :)

CLARIFICATION

Firstly – again my apologies for not giving everyone plenty of notice. Treeplanting came in as an idea late in the day, and sounds like a good enough idea to change dates given that we couldn’t get treeplanting organised for the weekend we were originally planning to meet (29th – 30th March)? (So yes, I was suggesting in my previous post that we go treeplanting instead of rather than as well as a having a Gathering on 29-30 March).

GENERAL SUGGESTION

I think it would be great if we kept our gatherings activity rather than meeting-based? And we can always stick 1-2 short “meeting”-type sessions in per weekend for when our bodies are tired but our minds lucid! What do people think about this as an idea?

SPECIFIC SUGGESTION

So, basically, my suggestion is:

Those of us who can, let’s do the treeplanting on 8-9 March. Then we can plant lots of trees, and have 1-2 brief sessions to discuss:

- How often do we want to have Gatherings, and do we want to have some regional ones as well as some national ones?

- When do we want to have a next Gathering?

- What type of activity would be appropriate? E.g. we could help with retrofitting a building for a community project; or generally help with an eco-project and learn some useful skills alongside getting to know each other and exchanging CRAG experiences.

We can decide to put any suggestions through the Forum, to make sure everyone has a chance to have some input – also people can let us know if they have ideas about these in advance.

I would not try and hold another national Gathering in late March..

QUESTIONS

Does the above sound reasonable? Do you think we should hold a gathering late March too or instead?

ACTIONS

If we do decide to go ahead with the treeplanting, it would be great if people could

(i) Please book your place directly with Treesponsibility (contacts in my previous posting). We need to pay for the weekend in advance in order to book. If you are sending checks, please make payable to Treesponsibility, and post to Barbara at 7 Cambridge Street, Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, HX7 6LN. Include a note with your name and address, a contact number/email, and that you’re booking for the Treesponsibility birthday weekend and you’re from CRAGs. If you’d like to pay by bank transfer, call them as of 8 Feb and ask for their bank details. They’ll post a leaflet with more details about the weekend nearer the time.

(ii) Please let me know if you’re coming and where you’d like to meet up with the rest of us so I have an idea. It would be good if I had a list of people who are coming too so I can let you have any last minute information etc. I can give you my mobile number too so you have an extra contact in case you need something last minute and can’t get in touch with Treesponsibility.

Once I have a list of who’s coming, we can discuss things like – how do we want to get from the train station to Height Gate – if we want to be picked up by the van we need to be at Hebden Bridge train station at 6. If we want to walk, we could meet at Leeds train station just before 4, catch the 4.08 train and be at Hebden Bridge for 5. Then it shouldn’t be more than an hour’s walk to Height Gate if we take the short route (done it in 45 mins before but downhill..), and we can start getting to know each other over a walk!

As concerns a timetable for the weekend, I suggest:

- Introductions on Friday (they do that anyway), and briefly discuss what we want to decide during/get out of the weekend – then think about these things/chat to various people about them while planting trees – Saturday treeplanting and then partying with the treesponsibility lot to celebrate their birthday – Sunday treeplanting in the morning, then lunch, then a quick meeting (1 hr?), and then head back to the train station either through the woods or by van..

CONGRATULATIONS

You’ve made it to the end of my post (again?)

Hope to see you soon!

I'll come too

Jessica

Jessica

Hi Despina et al

It’s a great idea, so count me in. It sounds like excellent fun, and I think it will do us good to do something practical – well, me anyway. We can have ad hoc CRAGs etc chats along the way, and maybe a couple of more formal discussions. I was thinking we had left it rather late to organise a formal conference anyway…

I can come up to Hebden Bridge on Fri eve and stay till Sun afternoon.

Two information questions: (1) is there a limit on how many people they’ll take, and (2) when do we have to book by?

Jessica R

Sounds brill, Despina! I

david

david

Sounds brill, Despina! I like the idea of a Gathering (rather than a Conference, CCC do a good one anyway) doing something practical and learning some new skills too, rather than machinating in a conference room!

We could have a few workshops in the afternoons or early evening (do we have time set aside for this?) – could decide the subjects on the day “COIN style”, or people could suggest things on this thread.

I wasn’t sure from your post, are you proposing to change dates to the 29-30 March? If so, I’d be in favour, and it seems likely more people would be able to make it (although, not sure, like Jessica, of maximum numbers).

8th-9th or 29th-30th?

Zaria

Zaria

Dear all,

I think a gathering with tree-planting would be fun, but I think we do have stuff to talk about…‘COIN style’ sounds good to me, as does using threads gather subjects people would like to discuss.

Personally I’m getting booked up with essential activities and need to book one or other of the weekends quite soon. Do we have a consensus with the 8th-9th? Am I right in thinking that’s the specific weekend that the tree-planting is going on?

thanks,
Zaria

Is it not possible to do treeplanting weekend 28-30 March?

Jessica

Jessica

Despina – I had thought when I read this thread yesterday that you were saying Treeresponsibility couldn’t have us on our orginal planned CRAGs conference weekend, 28-30 March, which is why you suggested 7-9 March. But now I’m not sure if this is what you meant. Please could you clarify? If it is possible to have it on the weekend of 28-30 March, then I think we should do it then, as this date has been on the calendar since last summer so hopefully many Craggers could make it. Please let us all know our options for dates asap.

Many thanks.
Jessica R

Clarifying dates - could I have two more days?

despina

despina

Hi everyone, sorry to have to apologise again!

You were correct to think that, as I was writing my previous post, I thought the only option for treeplanting was the 8-9th, which is what I had been told. Treesponsibility got back to me today asking how many people we were expecting to have and suggesting that, especially if there’s >15 of us, we could consider moving the CRAG treeplanting to – guess when – the last weekend of March. Apparently they had booked accommodation for that weekend, but then decided that they were not going to use it, and none of the three people I had talked to remembered about it. Until someone else suggested it this morning.

I decided not to alert the group to this today, as it’s not confirmed that they still have the booking/can make that weekend, and also as I was waiting to see whether we’d get more than 15 of us replying they could make it (which we haven’t yet). I emphasised to them that it is essential that they get back to me asap, and they said they would get back to me on Wednesday or Thursday.

If lots of people had said they could make 8-9, and we didn’t have many people saying that they could make the last weekend in March but not 8-9, I’m not sure I would have even confused things by mentioning the possibility of going with the original plan.. But since people seem to think that the original weekend is a much better option, please give me 1-2 days to clarify what the options are with Trees..

So, until tomorrow..

Good night

Finalising get-together plan: treeplanting 7-9 March

despina

despina

Dear All

Treesponsibility have confirmed that the only possibility for treeplanting is the weekend 7-9 March.

I suggest we go with this, as both Nick and I have changed jobs since discussions this summer; which means neither of us is going to be in Leeds in late March; which means that, even if we preferred to meet in Leeds on 28-30 March rather than go tree planting, the weekend would be very difficult to organise!

So, I suggest if people would like to come, please

(i) book your place directly with Treesponsibility (www.treesponsibility.com, 01422 843222 – The Treesponsibility Office, treesponsibility@yahoo.co.uk). If you’d like to pay by bank transfer, you need to phone them and ask for their bank details. They’ll post a leaflet with more details about the weekend nearer the time.

(ii) send me an email to let me know you’re coming, what time you can meet us on Friday/Sat morning and what time you’d need to leave on Sunday (if you haven’t already).

To recap on the plan (more details in previous relevant thread):

- meet up at Leeds train station, or on the train to Hebden Bridge, some time that we can arrange on Friday afternoon (7 March); train to HB is 45-50 mins from Leeds (or turn up some time on Friday at Hebden Bridge train station, or we could let you know where we’re staying/planting if you can’t make it till Sat.)

- we can arrange to be picked up from the station by the Treesponsibility van, or take our bikes with us and cycle – or walk to Height Gate, a lovely converted barn on a hill near HB (about an hour’s walk). If we want to be picked up by the van we need to be at Hebden Bridge train station at 6. If we want to walk, we could meet at Leeds train station just before 4, catch the 4.08 train and be at Hebden Bridge for 5.

- all meals will be vegan and cooked on site by the Treesponsibility lot, including soup and tea/cake brought to the treeplanting site – they’re great cooks, so food will be a treat! there will be local organic ale for sale on the site (I’m guessing at very reasonable prices).

- accommodation: floor space, so we need to bring mats and sleeping bags. The barn should be pretty warm though! If someone would really need a bed, we’d need to let them know because I think there is only 1 or 2.

- we can spend some time on Friday evening getting to know each other, and discussing what we want to get out of the weekend.

- on sat and sun morning we will be driven (alas!) to the planting site by the lovely Billy in the treesponsibility van. on Saturday evening we’re welcome to join the treesponsibility birthday weekend festivities.

- we can arrange to take some time on Sunday to recap on the discussions we’ve had over the weekend, and have some further discussions as a group.

- we can return to the train station on sunday by any of the means mentioned above, and at a time we can arrange (makes sense to do that once we know how far people are coming from/how long it would take to get back, so please let me know if you’re coming/where from).

I've booked...

Jessica

Jessica

Hi Despina – Thanks for finalising details.

I’ve just booked my train and called Barbara Hebditch to reserve a place. They will try and accomodate Craggers, but stress it’s first come, first served, so if you want to come, book asap! If we overflow, some people could camp…

Price for the weekend is £25, to be sent by cheque payable to TREESPONSIBILITY. Posting details above.

I’ve booked a train from London to Leeds and thence to Hebden Bridge, arriving Friday 5.37pm. I’ll be bringing sleeping mat etc, so I’d rather get picked up in the van!

I’ve booked a train back to London for 3.58pm Sunday. Cheapest rail prices for my trip are by booking direct on http://www.nationalexpresseastcoast.com/

Let me know if you want to join me on the London train!

Best

Jessica R

I’ve booked on the same

I’ve booked on the same train, arriving at 1737. One other thing they said was to bring a torch.

David you legend – I’ve booked on the same train too so hopefully you, me and Jessica can have a party on the way up to Hedben Bridge. I’ll buy a bottle of wine beforehand – now if you guys can bring mugs (as all good Craggers will – no disposable cups here!!) — and with any luck we can grab a table together…
Cool! Excitement. :)

Correction on price

Hey, sorry about the confusion – yes, price for the weekend is £25!! Though feel free to include donations to Treesponsibility – £25 including food and accommodation is a bargain, and they’re doing some great work reforesting the Calder valley..

I’ll sort out trains later.

see you friday

with luck I should also be able to catch the leeds train on friday that arrives hebden bridge at 17.something, I’ll have to peel off first thing Sunday morning though I’m afraid in order to get back to Bristol in time to resume motherly duties.

Yep, I’m coming too

What d’you reckon the chances are of getting a bike onto a suitable train at Leeds?

Anyone else taking a bike?

And is anyone taking a laptop in case we want to play calculators?

Arrangements for meeting this Friday evening at Hebden Bridge

Jessica

Jessica

As far as I know, everyone is trying to get to Hebden Bridge train station between 5.30 and 6pm on Friday. I’ve arranged with Barbara for the minibus to come at 6pm to fetch us all. If you can’t get there for 6pm, please call Barbara direct to make other arrangements – it sounds like they should be able to do another pick-up later.

Barbara reckons that we should all be able to fit in the house without having to use the ‘overspill barn’. Accomodation in the house consists of three upstairs bedrooms with carpets but no furniture. So make sure you each bring a mat and a sleeping bag. She reckons it’s warm enough, but says you could bring a hot water bottle, so maybe she means Yorkshire warm! Anyone truly intrepid is welcome to sleep in the barn.

There is a living room and a kitchen in the house also, and we can use the barn for meetings if we want a bigger space.

Vegan food is provided all weekend.

Bring wellies, waterproofs, gardening gloves and warm clothes, cause weather forecast is set to chilly…

If anyone else wants to join us, please let this thread and Barbara know asap!

See you all Friday.

Camera and paper/markers

david

david

Cool, thanks for the extra info.

Is anyone bringing a camera?

Also some large sheets of paper (>A2) and marker pens would be very handy for workshops, as they were at Climate Camp. Does anyone have some lying about? Otherwise I’ll buy some new.

Paper

I’ll bring the paper. (Not the pens, though)

Write-up & other threads ...

david

david

Well, this was a fantastic weekend. Thanks so much for organising it, Despina – we really missed you on the day!

I have put together a write-up, and the photos on the Tree Gathering 2008 page. Some other threads have come out of the meeting we held: see CRAG Shared Values (from the Tree Gathering) and The Good and the Bad of CRAGs.

I´m looking forward to the next one – any ideas anyone?
