Folks

I recommend this Electrisave device. Its a bit pricey (60 quid) but really gets to the bottom of electricity use in your property. I guess its really the precurser to the Smart Meter the utilities are keeping from us all.

Been running mine for nearly a week and found several places where it was going down the drain still.

It doesnt keep a running account though, just real time power draw, cost, CO2 emissions. you can also extrapolate base load supply and nominal power for your home. Let me know if you need any guidance.

It would be good if each

It would be good if each CRAG had one of these, or similar, that it could share around …

Perhaps it should come out

Perhaps it should come out of each groups CRAG fund

How does it differ?

How does the Electrisave differ from an energy meter which simply plugs into a socket and tells you how much an appliance is using (and only cost around £25 from B&Q)?

Lighting for a starter

Using it this week has reduced my electricity demand by 25%. This may be spikey just over the one week though, I’ll keep an eye over a month or so.

One of the things I found trickling energy without my knowledge was the kitchen lights. I didnt think they were too bad until I turned them off and found 300W dropped off the meter. Another was my PC on standby which I had measured with a stand alone pluggin device but got the measurment wrong by about 50W

The other is its static so no need to keep moving it about, makes measuring very easy to do.

The other things are that it agggregates all houslehold usage into one place, so makes determining average usage very easy. Also you can work down to a power demand that you always check before going to bed (ie the base load of the property. Mine is about 70W for fridge and stuff I cannot turn off but need like the router (about 10W))

Once you’ve had it a week and been dilligent you probably only need it to monitor stuff you accidentally leave turned on before going out or on holiday etc. So you could buy one unit and share it with other craggers a few weeks at a time. You could even use the crag fund to purchase one

Ewgeco monitoring device

Not sure about the name (!) but I came across this “Ewgeco” monitor whilst browsing the NESTA site. It shows how much electricity, gas and water you are using. The big innovation here is to use coloured bars to communicate energy use (as well as including water, of course), aiming to make it more accessible and easily understandable to all members of the household – especially children.
