Website: the human dimension

this thread split off from Front page: what are crags?

Members’ profiles:

Haven’t done my profile yet, but think as many of us as want to should do them – can be done without giving away too much personal info. Eg, rough indication of housing arrangements, lifestyle, and transport choices, why you wanted to join CRAGs, and what you’re finding challenging, how your behaviour is changing as a result of being in CRAGs, how CRAGs are helping you make changes… Personally, I wouldn’t want to have my photo and/ or surname up, but some of you may not mind, and some photos would break things up.

New section on ‘Who we are’:

Re quotes from CRAGgers, a good idea from John A. Why not build this into a larger theme? Shall we have a separate link at the top going to ‘Who we are’? We can build up a whole subsection on the website for individuals’ quotes, the individual members’ profiles that robin and andy were talking about, links to group homepages with group photos, the footprint page, maybe an index of members…. etc etc. Definitely agree that we need to present more of a human dimension. After all, the whole project is about human behaviour.

I’d like to allow our members to add more information about themselves that would be visible on their user pages. From I know we’re a pretty diverse bunch, and I think it would be interesting to be able to find out more about fellow CRAGgers, and, as Jessica says, a large part of this is all about human behaviour.

I’d like to know what you think would be interesting and appropriate (bear in mind it would all be voluntary). I have added photographs already. Based on the above and my own ideas I’ve come up with an initial list of possibilities :

  • Real name
  • Background / Bio / “Who I am”
  • Why join CRAGs? / Has CRAGs made a difference?
  • Lifestyle (eg. urban/rural – or more detail?)
  • External website / blog link
  • Location (could be displayed on a map, similar to groups)

Each entry needs to be clear, and there’s limited space so we don’t want overload. I would say (roughly) a max of 2 long items and 5 items in total).

What do you think?

I kind of like the idea of a carbon profile, similar to what you are asked to send to your carbon accountant when you join a CRAG.

Do you mean a person’s carbon footprint?

carbon footprint- not exactly

shannon

Not really. More like this (from the “How” section:

I share a house with 3 others
Our heating is by coal, oil and wood
We don’t get our electricity from a renewables source
Three of us own cars; one of them is mine
I am the only one joining the scheme

Andy’s done a quick survey of the profile pages, and found ~40 have been filled in so far – which isn’t bad! To help boost this up, I’ve added a section to the registration message that people see when they sign up (but perhaps the profile fields should also appear directly on the registration form).

I realise you can’t really update or post comments to your profile at the moment. For example, I did a trip by ferry I’d like to post about, and have moved. So I’ve been wanting to add a blog-style element for a while. However, there’s the danger it splits up the site or competes with the forum, so its purpose needs to be clearly defined. Hence, what about calling it, instead of a “web log” (or blog), a “carbon log” (or Clog!)? Try climbing a CRAG in clogs!
