“It’s not clear from an initial review of your website who is behind the crag network – that would be useful information.”

This is a useful piece of feedback that arrived in the website mail box today!

My rather stupid answer was: “The people behind it are basically the people who are involved. We have know [sic!] funding from anyone. If you do a search on “chronology” you will see how it started.”

http://www.carbonrationing.org.uk/wiki/crags-chronology

gives a very brief history of the development of the network. It would be good if all new groups to add to this chronology their significant dates.

Any thoughts on how we should better respond to this feedback?

how did I know?

Thinking back to when I first visited the website and we started the Redland crag, I was told about the site by one of our local group (we had a climate change group before we had a crag) and we also saw a newspaper article which explained that Andy Ross from Warwickshire on the way home with a bunch of mates after hearing George Monbiot speak, had decided he’d better do something so started the network. And somewhere on the site I remember looking at the photos of the flag at the climate march. So the whole crag thing had a very human feel to it. If you just come across the website then maybe you wouldnt get this same feel.

Knowing that the whole thing is the brainchild of ordinary people giving up there own time and energy is important because since the 1970’s the world at large has been brainwashed into believing that anyone who cares about the planet is a highly dangerous ‘eco-freak’ – read Sharon Beder’s book Global Spin to see how this was done. Whenever I see things on the web I think ‘who is actually behind this’. You have to be able to trust that it is not a front for something with a slightly different motive. So maybe there does need to be a simple easily accessed explanation of the origins of the network, with perhaps a link to national news articles about the crag network.

Spartacus with a human face and full participation :)

Definitely agree with the Spartacus comment. And also agree that a more ‘human face’ to the website is in order – which is why the Islington CRAG is working on some member profiles, to be put up on our group page in the near future. We’d encourage other groups to do similar, with members who are happy to say a little about their background and lifestyles, and their experiences of carbon rationing to date. Those who have read the BBC article on CRAGs will see how human interest stories provoke… well, interest.

Lastly, there is a case to be made for some kind of overarching support structure for the CRAGs. This sort of exists already with the website but it’s quite a lot of work for one administrator, and with increasing numbers of CRAGs and media interest, could get heavier. We could get along without needing too much formality so long as lots of CRAGgers (continue to) participate on the website, adding info to their own group pages, contributing to wiki documents etc. So, this is a plea to CRAG group chairs to remember to put info on the group pages! Cheers.

I have added this to the FAQ under Who is behind crags?. I hope this reflects the prevailing view – please edit if not!

It might be an idea to introduce the main admins (& regular contributors), so we are more transparent and firendly. Good idea?

David prompted me to update who is behind crags? which I have done. Angela, I completely agree with you about making it personal and the organisation transparent. Will add newspaper links. But this page is very hard to find if you don’t have the link.

Well, it is listed under the “faq” link at top. Alternatively, we could have a direct link on the footer, somewhere!
