Thanks, everyone, for coming on 28th. I have tried to summarise the main points below. This email has been around our list for a week or so and I have had no objections to the content so I am posting it here for the benefit of the wider network if they are interested. If you want to add or subtract anything drop me an email. Some of the email text was in italics. These were things we talked about but I don’t know if we necessarily got to a consensus on them. Maybe we can “ratify” these notes at the next meeting which Daryl has proposed be on

Thursday 31st May. 7.30 at mine.

1. INTRODUCTIONS

Attendees: Russell, Will, Daryl, Andy, Kat, Katie, Adrien, Martin, Brendan, Alasdair
Apologies: Jake, Irene
Notes also circulated to: Iain

2. FOOTPRINTING

Seven of us summarised our 2006 footprints for home energy, car and plane travel. These came to a grand total of 36t or 36000kg of CO2 giving us an average of 5100kg. This is very close to the 2003 average of 5200kg given by Mayer Hillman for the same emissions sources!

[Suggested action: Anyone who is keen to be part of gCRAG and who didn’t manage to summarise their footprint last night, please email me an estimate of your 2006 emissions (from home, car and plane) so we can fix our baseline.]

3. COUNTING

Home Energy:

Home workers to get 40% reduction on home energy (electricity and heating) bills to reflect the business use portion of their total (i.e. [8hrsx5days] / [14hrsx7days] x 100% = 40%)

Electricity 0.5kgCO2 per kWh
Gas 0.2kgCO2 per kWh

Ecotricity, Good Energy and NPower Juice to get 10% reduction.

Travel:

Car 0.3kgCO2/mile
Plane inside Europe 0.8kgCO2/mile (or by www. chooseclimate.org)
Plane outside Europe 0.5kgCO2/mile (or by www. chooseclimate.org)
Train/Bus 0.1kgCO2/mile

Car owner to cover all car miles unless trip is outside Strathclyde, in which case car miles to be divided amongst all passengers.

Train/bus trips outside Scotland only.

[Suggested action: Anyone who is keen to be part of gCRAG, please email me your estimated start of January 2007 meter and mileage readings so we can keep a quarterly track of our emissions.]

[Suggested action: Andy to contact gCRAGgers at end of March to get end of first quarter readings.]

4. TARGET

In 2007 gCRAGgers free to emit maximum of 4500kg each from above sources without penalty. If this figure is reduced by 10% year on year we will be on target to go below
3000kg in 2011
2000kg by 2015
1000kg by 2021 and
500kg by 2029!

5. STICKS/CARROTS

Over-emissions (aka carbon debts) to be paid into carbon fund at 7p per kg.
Under-emissions (aka carbon savings) to be paid from carbon fund at same rate.
Savers to decide what is done with their payment from the carbon fund.

[Suggested action: This money thing is clearly not for everyone. Please let Andy know whether you wish to
1. take part in the monetary side of gCRAG
2. be part of a non-monetary parallel group – perhaps known as “gCRAG control”!
3. not receive any more pesky emails from gCRAG.]

6. OTHER POINTS CONSIDERED

Food (and for that matter all the “stuff” we buy) is part of our total footprint. Reducing/cutting out meat consumption has big emissions benefits. See for example

http://goveg.com/environment-globalwarming.asp

Babies/children should/should not get a carbon ration.

[Suggested action: We all check out our food footprint and report next time.]

7. NEXT MEETING

A meeting in May was suggested but no date set. What day is the 31st?

Still awake? Well done!

best wishes

Andy
