Hello again everyone

I’ve written a draft of aims and objectives of this group (below), as promised. It’s longer than I had thought it would turn out to be, so maybe we need a shorter version as well? Also, it’s not formal but not completely informal either, I thought that’s appropriate(?), please advise!

It is intentionally just a brainstorming of ideas as obviously it should be discussed on the forum, and probably something can be agreed on in our next meeting to go on publicity material, website etc. So please amend!!

Our main aim as Leeds Carbon Reduction Action Group is to reduce our carbon emissions by as much as possible, and enjoy the process of doing so through learning together in creative ways, and sharing our achievements. We would also like to encourage as many people as possible to join us in achieving together and supporting each other. We prefer to make any decisions based on concensus of our members wherever possible. We have set some objectives to get us started, even though we are very flexible, and prepared to reconsider these as our knowledge base increases and momentum is built, or if the priorities of the group just evolve. At the moment, our objectives are: 1. To measure how much carbon is emitted through our transport and home use of fuels and electricity. We can learn about estimating our carbon emissions together, by organising enjoyable workshops, full of activity and knowledge transfer. 2. To set our own personal targets in terms of reducing these emissions. 3. To support each other to achieve our targets, through personal contact and more fun workshops.. 4. To spread the word about this group! In the near future, we are hoping we can measure the carbon emitted in other aspects of our lives, like food consumption. We would also like to come up with reasonable suggestions concerning targets to be set, depending to some extent on personal circumstances. It is not our direct aim to pressure governments or organisations – or individuals! – to provide low carbon alternatives, or to be transparent about carbon emissions of their products or services. But we realise that doing so might at times prove invaluable to help us achieve our main objectives. This group might therefore function as a pressure group in the future, as and when our members agree that this is the best course of action. _______________________________

Despina, that looks really

Despina, that looks really good. But i guess I would like more formal objectives. And get the friendliness in at the beginning and end… but maybe thats just me. The idea of “fun workshops” is also a bit scary, and I think that calling ourselves a “pressure group” may discourage some people.

Some changes I would make….

We prefer to make any decisions based on consensus of our members wherever possible.

We have set some objectives to get us started, even though we are very flexible, and prepared to reconsider these as our knowledge base increases and momentum is built, or if the priorities of the group just evolve. At the moment, our objectives are:

1. To record our individual carbon emissions from transport, and domestic use of fossil fuels and electricity, over which we have direct control.

2. To set personal targets to reduce these emissions.

3. To provide the support and encouragement necessary for all members of the group to meet or exceed their personal targets.

4. To publicise the group and encourage others to join.

5. To explore the potential to record and reduce carbon emissions from aspects of our lives not covered by the current accounting system.

6. To explore the feasibility of common targets which could be equitably used by all group members.

It is not our direct aim to pressure governments, organisations – or individuals! – to provide low carbon alternatives, or to be transparent about carbon emissions of their products or services. But we realise that doing so might at times prove invaluable to help us achieve our main objectives.

More objectives..

I just realised the objectives I’ve put down don’t include providing a model, or just demonstrating that the will is there, for government carbon trading schemes to be put in place.. Maybe that should be stated as one of our indirect (or direct?) objectives?
