The Leeds CRAG calculator

Thread started on 7/4/2007 11:24

Matt Carmichael emailed me his amendments to Nigel’s comments on our calculator at http://www.leedstidal.org/sccleeds/calculator.html so I’ve posted it under “files”.

Hi folks
These are all the email addresses I have. There’s probably a way to send to everyone via the CRAG site, but I haven’t worked it out if there is…
Here’s my comments on the calculator. Sorry I can’t make it to next Saturday’s meeting, but maybe this evolving doc will give you some talking points/decisions to make. Is someone going to make sure everyone has a copy?
cheers
Matt

My own thoughts are these…

The original idea of the web-based version was to provide a comparatively quick and easy way of working out where we were each starting from. It also acts as a bit of a promotion tool: would-be members can get some instant results and a taste of what’s involved in CRAGging.

If we make it a lot more complicated, it’ll look more daunting, because who really likes filling in forms on a website?

Another very practical issue is that neither my skills nor the existing webhost will cope easily with sending off the data automatically to the accountant (Nigel): and as for updating a database, forget it! Sorry – way beyond me :(

So… I can make a few simple modifications to the web calculator (including sources for our figures) – but I suggest we stick to using an Excel spreadsheet for the official ongoing data and calculations, because that’s going to be a lot easier to adjust and it doesn’t matter quite so much if it looks complicated because only the committed will see it!

Aviation figures on the Leeds calculator

Bill Phelps

With regard to the aviation figures, I took the figure of 0.51kg/km from the CRAG spreadsheet, which simplifies everything as a short-haul (=worst case) flight. I could fairly easily add in a long-haul figure as well (0.32kg/km?). There’s a good discussion of the topic elsewhere on this site. And if you dig around, you’ll probably discover where some of the other figures came from.

It’s clearly a complicated and controversial topic.

There’s a lot to be said for adopting the figures that other CRAGS are using, where possible. (Although I think our 50% decision on green electricity was a good one.)

Keeping a database

I agree with Bill, but I’d like to add that I think we need to keep an updated database, so we can easily quantify and graphically demonstrate the overall impact of this group – overall reductions, reductions of highest/lowest emitters, reductions in different types of emissions etc. I can easily do that if everyone fills in their own Excel datasheet – but of course i’d prefer if someone else could take it on, spread the responsibility! :)
