I put together an easy to use spreadsheet for calculating our direct, measurable carbon footprints under the files tab.
There are a number of other good calculators out there. Here are a few that I have used that come recommended:
EPA personal emissions calculator1
An Inconvenient Truth’s calculator for individuals and families2
Carbonfund emissions calculator including indirect emissions for individuals, families, and businesses3
BP’s carbon footprint calculator4
World Resources Institute calculator (lets you input your electricity and fuel usage)5
Real Costs air travel calculator6
Environmental Defense personal and family footprints7
Note that you may get very different results for each of the sites that calculates your overall footprint depending on what each site includes. Have fun with the calculators- I hope it is a grounding and eye-opening experience. But don’t get discouraged or hopeless. You can always cut back!
