Since Peckham CRAG has officially been active for a year, I thought I’d start a new thread for us to add our carbon footprints for the period so we can calculate our group footprint as a baseline against which we can measure our carbon reduction progress.

I joined in June 2008, so can’t quite provide a year’s numbers, but the ones I do have are:

June – July
total: 111kg CO2 (energy: 28, travel: 83)

July – August
total: 63kg CO2 (energy: 43, travel: 20)

August – September
total: 283kg CO2 (energy: 24, travel: 259)

September – October
total: 109kg CO2 (energy: 30, travel: 79)

October – November
total: 128kg CO2 (energy: 41, travel: 87)

November – December
total: 214kg CO2 (energy: 188, travel: 26)

NB: These figures relate to the period between meetings, so start on the third Tuesday of each month and run for a month up to just before the next meeting. Also, my energy records relate only to electricity, I have no use of gas.

Zaria's 2008 carbon countup

I started Peckham CRAG in October 2007 and started counting in earnest in February 2008. I have found it really useful to count carbon and be aware of exactly how I generate it, and apart from the lekky/gas/train figures I have also:

1. got my bicycle going again, so cutting down on local travel that way;

2. changed jobs from a university-admin job to Education project manager at WWF, which has upped my commute emissions (and is now obliging me to fly!) but hopefully also helped my contribution to sustainability in the education system;

3. grown some of my own vegetables, and eaten them!

4. dramatically cut back on eating red meat;

5. convinced my un-green flatmate to change some lightbulbs to energy-saving ones, something of a triumph!

6. made some draught-excluders at the CRAG

7. Told a lot of people about CRAGs! Including my colleagues at WWF, who seem to think that they can continue burning carbon with abandon because they do ethical jobs!

Not bad all told.

Here are my 2008 stats, all in kg carbon equivalents:

– Feb – March: 357 leccy, 182.9 gas, 46.2 travel. total 586.1 – March – April: 46.25 leccy, 111.6 gas, 155.21 travel. total 313 – April – May: 61 leccy, 55.8 gas, 103.4 travel. total 220.2 – May – June: 40.5 leccy, 21.7 gas, 1120 travel (train to Valencia, Spain!) total: 1182.2 – June – July: 40.25 leccy, 21.7 gas, 52.5 travel total 114.5 – July – August: 40.5 leccy, 15.5 gas, 256.75 travel total 312.75 – August – September: 50 leccy, 18.6 gas, 250.2 travel total 318.8 – September – October: 58.5 leccy, 34.1 gas, 887.5 travel total 980.1 (train to York and Berlin) – October – November: 57.25 leccy, 102.3 gas, 281 travel total 440.5 (getting colder, live in expensive urban tent made of bricks) – November – December: 57.25 leccy, 102.3 gas, 73.5 travel total 233

Grand total: just a shade under 5 tonnes for 11 months. A bit of a shock!

Keep Cragging on,
