Sevenoaks CRAG meeting
Wednesday April 25th 2007 at OVMH
Present: David Bassendine, Rosemary Goodacre, Susan Fallman, Mary
Bassendine, Mary Edmead, Caroline Copleston, Lisa Simmonds, Ian
- Using the worksheets and some opportune estimates, we roughly calculated our footprints over the past year, ranging from 3.2 – 14 tons CO2:
David: 3.4t
Rosemary: 8.3t
Sue: 3.2t
Mary B: 14t
Mary E: 4.3t
Caroline: 4.76t
Lisa: 6.7t (estimate)
- Footprinting – what to count and how:
— Green electricity is to be counted at 95% of normal electricity, so
some credit is given (roughly the ROC throwaway rate). Ian explained
that all companies are required by law to use a certain amount of green
energy 10% by 2010. There is, however, also a case for trying to
influence the market by showing what you want
— 10 tonnes a head is the average footprint for the UK including our
infrastructure, and ~ 5 tonnes for personal emissions.
— We are to start our rationing year from April 1st, and plan to take
readings throughout the year. (although we did not discuss meter
readings (timing and frequencies) in detail)
—Children have the same ration as adults, even though most of them use
more electrical goods!
—Public transport: we are to record any long (ie major trips) or
regular (ie commuting) trips
—Car transport: we decided to look up our car’s emissions band using
the VCA website (http://www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk/search/search.asp)
- Allowances and prices (if any) – to be discussed at next meeting
- Reducing our footprints:
—Electricity: discussed different types of timers and monitors, and Ian
is to come back to us on this.
—Ideas: Mary E suggested each of us should commit to a small action to
reduce footprints (eg replacing lightbulbs etc.) at each meeting. We
thought this would be motivational and hold us to our commitments!
- Next meeting: was to be on Wed 6th June at a smaller venue, because of the relatively small crowd!
