CRAGs“”When I heard about iCRAG I was excited to find people locally that wanted to take personal responsibility for reducing their use of fossil fuels. I joined the group because it offered support and the chance to share ideas and inspiration to cut my own, and other peoples, carbon use. I don't believe that carbon rationing is the only answer, but one of many exciting initiatives out there that might help us avoid complete disaster. The Camps for Climate Action, and the principles of Permaculture have been two major sources of inspiration that also offer me a glimmer of hope for the future. |
carbonprofileI live on a boat and use solar panels and a wind turbine for most of my energy use onboard. I use a 1kw petrol generator if I need to run power tools, which is very seldom. I have a multifuel burner that burns wood and coal. This past winter I tried to stop using coal completely but ended up using 3 bags of coal, some when I did my back in and couldn't chop wood, and again when we had that really freezing cold patch. It was really dificult at times, especially if you need to get up early in the morning to a cold boat. It also takes a lot of work and space to process and store enough firewood for a whole winter but friendly tree surgeons have been a great help. I cook on a gas cooker using LPG. I cycle, but also have a small diesel car that I have been driving on recycled chip fat converted into biodiesel. I use the car mainly for long trips outside London and carrying things that are too big or heavy for my bike trailer, but I have to admit that it gets easier to justify its use and it is the car that takes up most of my footprint and I really need to sort this out. Cars are additive and make me lazy! I work at a local Tree Nursery and Forest Garden and along with lots of amazing people, grow food and try to plant as many trees (especially fruit and nut) around Hackney. We also organise and run workshops related to growing food, permaculture and caring for trees and woodlands. expertiseLow impact living on boats and growing food in cities. |
