detailsnameRick Morgan backgroundI am in my early 50's and live in Sheffield. Although I've been interested in Climate Change for some years, reading George Monbiots book Heat got me interested in carbon rationing. I graduated in Physics. I started a CRAG for my area in 2008. I love the countryside, am a keen walker and occasionally lead walks in the Peak District and north of Sheffield for a flourishing local group www.s40wg.org(using public transport where possible). |
CRAGsSheffield area (admin) “”I was impressed by the principle of Contraction and Convergence though I now acknowledge that there are practical challenges. In the CRAG I initiated, we have taken C&C as the basis for setting different targets for different members. As the Carbon Accountant I have worked with each person to work out their typical CO2 emissions (based on our CRAGs rules) before they joined. They are then set annual targets which decrease each year towards a common long term goal of 500kg by 2030. This is designed to attract high emitters (one started at 12.5 tonnes). Setting up a new member takes longer and requires some judgement if the person has flown irregularly. However, the exercise is an opportunity to teach/learn carbon consciousness by working through a persons CO2 emissions with them to learn how they are made up. |
carbonprofileTransport : I use public transport. Energy : Currently (Sept 2011), I use electricity from a Big 6 supplier on a "brown" tariff for hot water and heating on the basis of OFGEMs Green Supply guidelines (published 4 February 09) which state that irrespective of supplier or tariff the best proxy for the carbon intensity of electricity is the grid average. The Green Electricity thread on this site gives further info. I am concentrating on further reducing my usage (about 3600 kWh in the year to 30/4/11). I live in a mid-1980s bungalow with a mediocre energy efficiency rating. |
