The heating footprint of a home depends on the type of fuel, and the quantity needed to maintain a reasonable temperature (i.e. thermal efficiency). Alternative heating technologies that take advantage of ambient heat (e.g. ground source heat pumps) have much lower footprints, as do fuels that are sourced renewably (e.g. biomass boilers).
